The APA Ethics Code is written in such a way that it gives the psychologist professional room to make their own professional judgement according to the job. (Keith-Spiegel & Koocher, 2016) Even though the task force wasn’t “technically” performing the torture, they were not preventing the harm either. I understand the ideologies behind hiring a psychologist for that type of job, but it’s unfair to put the task of using so much discresion for the psychologists. I’m happy to see that there was a backlash from the whole ordeal, but if anything it teaches aspiring psychology professionals that we must be careful in what type of jobs we take and to keep in mind our own moral codes apart from the APA.ReferencesFink, S. New York, New York: Oxford University Press.STUDENT TWO:The conclusions reached by the report was that the CIA used intense torture tactics on detainees and then tried to diminish their activities. I could understand why they used such harsh techniques, because of the terrorists attacks. However, the extreme torture was not necessarily legal. I think their anger overshadowed their judgement. It violated a lot of human rights and many of the prisoners were wrongfully detained. One prisoner in particular the report names is Abu Zubaydah, who was held from 2002 to 2008. The CIA thought him to be an aide to bin Laden and help orchestrate the attacks. The report seems to indicate that he received the worst torture of all the detainees. According to reports, officials received all the useful information from him in 2003 and continued to torture him for years. In 2014, Poland paid Abu Zubaydah 130,000 euros due to the US torturing him on their soil. The mental health professionals developed the torture techniques to help train US soldiers, if they were to get captured. They did not intend for higher officials to use the techniques on other prisoners. Their further involvement with these torture procedures was unethical and violated several APA ethical codes. They were not competent in creating information collection techniques. However, it seems like the professionals had no choice and did what they were ordered to do. Several professionals tried to seek help for the situation, but did not prevail. ReferencesAbu Zubaydah. (2019, April 29).
