Case Study: Mario is a 74 year old male that has been admitted to hospital (for an unrelated illness) however he has cracked and sore heels and his wife ‘Angela’ insists that you rub olive oil on his feet that she has bought in from home in an unmarked bottle. However as you are a student nurse all you can do is advised the registered nurse in charge of Mario.
The registered nurse states that as the doctor has not written up (charted)the application of olive oil for Mario therefore it should not be applied. She further states that as the bottle isn’t labelled it could be anything and if in fact it is olive oil it will create a ‘falls risk’ to her patient who is frail and a two (2) assist for mobility.

process (of Assess/Plan/Implement/Evaluate)students are required to
develop a nursing care plan about this situation identifying
appropriate goals and how they would be achieved. Students should
also provide a rationale for why the goals are important. This
nursing care plan must be the plan of care that would be initiated
if a Registered Nurse were looking after this patient again now
that there is evidence to support this.
