The Center for Environmental Management & Analysis (CEMA) at Montclair State University which is located in my township of Montclair, NJ is a part of the College of Science and Mathematics in the Department of Earth & Environmental Studies. CEMA partners with business, government and non-profit organizations to solve many of the environmental problems facing New Jersey, the region, and the global community (Clauss-Ehlers, C. S 2010). CEMA is currently working on a task in Paterson, NJ examining brownfield sites for possible renovation. “Water pollution poses threats to individual countries and communities, but it also threatens global safety, health, and business (some businesses use water as an input, such as beverage industries, while others use water to clean facilities or cool equipment, such as electronic component manufacturers (Hammond, S. C., & Christensen, L. J. 2016). CEMA provides University-wide leadership and coordination for energy, and environment, related research and service activities. The Center focuses its resources to address:
- air and water quality issues
- solid and hazardous waste
- sediment and land contamination
- coastal resource management
Cema and expert energy specialist are also working together to create protocols New Meeting for the State of New Jersey. This will help get rid of obstacles and expand infrastructure for the creation of photovoltaic power and solar hot water on a broad range here in New Jersey.

Smith Engineering Company deals with civil and structural engineering with multiple locations throughout New Mexico. A more recent project they’ve worked on was a wastewater treatment facility for the city of Portales. Water in the region is fairly scarce and using the latest technology to create a new plant proves to be very difficult but very important. They are responsible for cleaning dirty water with as little pollution byproducts as possible. Being a wastewater treatment facility, Smith Engineering is literally responsible for taking contaminated water from the community and distributing it back to them clean enough for any use. “In addition, the project includes new city wide effluent reuse distribution system for the city parks and fire protection system” (Smith Engineering, 2017, “Wastewater Treatment Facility,” para. 1). Fresh water is becoming scarcer and cleaning what water we have is very important. According to the CNN library, “Consider the 2016 crisis in the city of Flint, Michigan, where numerous citizens became sick due to the local municipality's failure to ensure safe drinking water supplies for the city”(as quoted in Hammond & Christensen, 2016, 5.1, “Environmental Issues,” para. 12).
